Now I wonder: Is there a rule governing when to use which of the two
forms. Tea bowl or Teabowl.

John, what object are you talking about? A yunomi type tea bowl or
a tea ceremony type teabowl? Vince's son Morgan has a good page on the
subject of Japanese tea drinking vessels:

http://employees.oxy.edu/mpitelka/bowl_terms.html

If you do a Google search

* 14* for **matchawan (mostly from ClayArt)**
*3,870* for **"teabowl"**.
*9,310* for **"**tea*
*
**bowl*
*"***
11,400* for **chawan

Interesting....****
