Yesterday Nona and i went on the Historic Mine Tour of Bartow County Ga. We
loaded up an a big airconditioned bus with about 50 other rock hounds. We were
allowed to bring rock picks and collecting is allowed.
The first stop we drove the bus 285 feet into the mine that mines aggregate
,its called Corbin Gheiss, its the oldest dated rock in Ga. It dates to 1.1
billion years old. I got a couple of small rocks .. Way cool.. We had to dodge
big trucks and loaders.. There were big trackhoes pounding big rock to small
sizes like the size of a car.
Next we went to Red Top Mountain State Park to see Iron Hill Mine. It had
Goethite and Hematite.. That mine had closed in 1923. That was fun they hauled
us around on trailers with seats behind a tractor, a Blue one and a Green one.
Next we went to Coopers Iron Furnace,, Way cool again. Also that one had
something to do about the Big Train Race during thr Civil War . The General was
being chased by Coopers Locamotive..
Stop 4 , New Riverside Ochre where i got some really nice rocks of Barite.
Its a really heavy rock mined for Barium, Got to see how they break it down..
Lots of heavy machinery
Stop 5 , New Riverside Ochre - Dobbins Mine.Got to see Ochre being dug. That
is going to be under a express way in 2007. They have to dig it out and
leave. Found some really nice Irradacente Hematite. Its a rock that looks like a
rainbow. I found a big rock of that . Had to carry it in 2 pieces. A lady
offered money for it ..Cool
It was a great day. I will say somethig about next year to see about letting
people sign up . Also the Museum is exspanding and there will be lots of
class rooms and other facilities to have Clay Conferences ,,
They will also have a digital planetaruim, wont they be fun!!

Well back to the salt mine making pots

Just got back from a trip to the Franklin Mineral Museum, Franklin, NJ.
Besides the museum, they also own a mine dump site on the same property
where folks can go through the pile of rock rubble searching primarily for
fluorescing minerals.
I was looking for Willemite, a somewhat rare zinc silicate, because that is
similar to what is produced in macro-crystalline glazes. It shows up a
bright green under a black light. Found some of that plus a few other
minerals, such as Franklinite.
