just a note to let you all know that bill campbell had
a fire and lost his entire place of business.

he has insurance, and will rebuild.
but, a big pain in the butt for all.

he said `i am not a victim, so don't treat me like one`.
a great spirit...and a great guy.

I find myself stunned at this news. My partner and I spent most of last Thursday with Bill as he showed us how to use a machine we had just purchased and then gave us a wonderful tour of his studio and gallery. I learned so much as always. Bill has been wonderful through the years giving helpful suggestions on how to build a better business. His loss is so great, but knowing the kind of guy he is I'm sure he will persevere and do even better.

How can we reach Bill? I wish to make him an offer.
I am glad at least he was insured as my isured would not cover my buildings
that had kilns and that was what burned last August.

Bill Campbell's business has always been responsive and generous. I first
was aware of his stuff when I was so impressed about a lamp design he had
which was SO superior to others I had seen. I had the name and called and
the office was so nice and gave me the name of the supplier they used with
no hesitation.

Best to them in managing this disaster. We'll look forward to the news
that they are back in business.

To Bill,
Over the years we have known each other, you have been the kindest, most open,
caring and helpful human being. You have called me on the phone, when I have
posted questions on clayart that required person to person answers. You are
one terrific person!
I am so sorry for your loss and wonder if there is anything I can do to help
you?
Sincerely
Susan

Susan
Thank you for the kind words. Everything is going to be fine. We are working
with our insurance people, and they seem to be helpful.

Bill,

Good to hear all is going well.Reconstruction the loss is a heartbreaking
task.

Would you, please, share the name of your insurer as some of us do not seem
to be able to get studio coverage with our traditional homeowners agents?T
hank you in advance.

Best wishes.

Now would be a good time for everyone to review their insurance policy. Traditional homeowners policies such as State Farm, Allstate ususally will not insure an in home studio. They may insure you as a "hobby" but if you have a loss, proving that your claywork is a hobby as opposed to a business could be very difficult. If you hide the fact that you have a studio and suffer a loss you may find yourself not covered at all even though the fire may have started in you kitchen as opposed to your studio.

Usually you can find insurance through an independent agent who deals with commercial and residential insurance from a number of companies. They may want to see your studio. This is in your best interest since they will tell you things to do to assure your safety.

Don't be tempted to save money by hiding the fact that you have a studio or that it is a business not a hobby. In the long run you could loose much more than you gain.

Kathy
When I built my studio, I called my State Farm agent and they sent over an
underwriter to look at the structure and wrote me a policy for fire/.theft,
etc. here in Northern VA....I am surpirsed that you could not get a studio policy
there in Michigan?....and since I have all my insurance, car/home/personal
articles with them, they gave me a price based on that. It is still, in my
opinion , a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I have no choice. I have this
incredible 1000 sq foot block and glass structure and I HAVE to insure it. They
have also covered the kilns and all the equpment, as I gave them a rough
estimate of what it would cost to replace everything. I am also covered on the
road to and from shows with my work and booth structure.
Insurance is just a necessity.
