glaze tests general and something that bothered me.

Dear Clayart,
This group of tests had many under fired results. I tested several of =
Emmanuel Cooper's glazes, which ranged from cone 6 to 8. I will retire =
them in at a higher temperature later. Thank you Bonnie S. for all the =
recipes.

Otherwise, I will report mostly on the Val Cushing glazes I tested. I =
found them at Ababi's website, in an article that is posted on his site.

The darlings of these tests was the cone 5-6 Satin Mat Smooth Whitish =
Glaze. =20
It tested just like it's name. The surface is mat and smooth and the =
oxides resulted in rich and deep colors in the base. =20
Overall, the surfaces are speckle. =20

I am working quickly to load the photos up at =
http://photos.yahoo.com/alisapots

If you check and they are not there, check in a little while. The best =
results I will later add to my web page.

I have thought a lot about the discussion of glaze chemistry, being =
scared and the importance of continuing cultural practices.
I am most interested in cultural and subcultural trends that give us =
inspiration and show up in our work. =20

Tony has an enormous readership around the Firebox , very accomplished =
and many fans. John and Ron and others, who have given us glaze =
chemistry to work with in mild, non imposing layout most can work with, =
also have an enormously important role in developing our craft. Crucial =
perhaps, because they are making us aware of what we are doing and how =
to avoid the long term effects of poisoning. What we do with =
information and how we make our craft are personal choices. However, =
what grips me in this discussion, is the importance of each of us, big =
and little, to allow us all to feed into the information chain and be =
respected for just that. I think we as a community, struggling at =
times, should try to maintain openness and mutual respect for what each =
other is doing. I may not do what you do or like what you do, but if I =
like it or not, there should be space in our community for your thoughts =
and work, along with my own. I think in general, we are a very =
positive, inspiring and supportive society.

It is possible that many still think cone 6 is for pussycats. Maybe they =
have not tried it. In time, I was able to shrug that "stigma" off, one =
created by our own community. But the same community helped me to build =
to up my own self esteem again as an ex cone 9er. In time I could see =
there are many, many ceramists firing cone 6 and there is space. More =
space available without kicking anyone out.=20

I hope that there are some tests you can use.

regards from Alisa in Denmark
I was just getting worried that our 10 year old Helene was getting too =
fast grown up.
But I was comforted again when I came into her room and it had that =
grammar school smell
of pencil sharpening.

Hey Alisa:

I am so glad that you share with us the results of your cone 6 tests.
How else are we going to learn and be inspired? I'm also glad that you
give us the particulars of your tests like heating profile and
ingredients particulars.

As for the other thing, don't you know, dear, that cone 10 redux (or
cone 9) is just cone 6 ox a little hotter and with a little less oxygen?
Simple, huh?

Vive la France! (and Denmark) ((and Texas))=20
