I am now just plain tired and disgusted with this particular rant on the
ClayArt list.......especially Clennell.... Stop wining.......if the Shino is put
in a cup, teapot or pitcher etc..... and the Glaze test comes back with some
disturbing news.......then for goodness sakes LEARN from it for once in your
life.....Good for your customer that she wants to test FUNCTIONAL WARE THAT IT
MIGHT NOT ACTUALLY BE FUNCTIONAL.......food safety is a function of a
mug...geezzzzzzz..... it is also a function of a plate....casserole....teapot etc...so
if the Shino is not foodsafe and is being put where it can do damage to
someones health....then perhaps you might consider feeling responsible to do
something about it.....if food is involved with a ceramic product.....you the potter
are RESPONSIBLE.........I am very grateful for all the long hard work John and
Ron have done to further the quest for keeping our ceramic craft industry
moving forward in a more aware way...... and as they have pointed out many
times.....their book is only the begining of making safer functional
glazes......Thank you very much John and Ron for all the work you have done in the area of
food safety....you are appreciated by many......and furthermore.......nowhere
absolutely nowhere in their writing have they ever said that there way was the
only way.......but they did say......and listen up Tony and Lee......that they
worked on very specific glazes.... tested them thoroughly.....created very
stable bases for people to experiment and do further tests....that each potter
had to test their own ware because of all the variables......and their book
considers only the cone six range of pottery....I believe you two are
jealous....and afraid that people will get couscious enough to question the safety of your
ware.....when you should be the one conscious enough and questioning enough
to test your products.... For all you know your glazes may be indeed
foodsafe....but for goodness sakes find out......I use liner glazes for things like
teapots where the customer is going to put tea in and let it sit perhaps til the
next millenium before drinking it.....Its more work but it is also making a
safe product....whew......sorry for the rant but it was good to write it and
send.......take care all.....Suzanne Kraman
