They give you different information; they are not
interchangeable. Thermocouples measure temperature,
and can give immediate information about cooling
as well as heating. They do not, however, measure
heat-work. Only cones will do that. So, use both.

Hi John,
I see Snail took care of the thermocouple question.....As for the kiln wash, Do you mean fire the kiln wash and shelves alone? Unless that is some mystery procedure for New shelves, I wouldn't recommend wasting that kiln energy. Three coats of kiln wash on new, untreated shelves is right, let them dry or candle the kiln a bit longer with your first bisque and fire away. You may want to check some literature on Reduction Firing, plenty of references in the archives. Happy Fires.
