Steve.......to repeat.....RAKU IS FOR DECORATIVE PURPOSES ONLY!!!!! To use
it otherwise is what those of us from this neck-o-the-woods call "butt ugly
ignorant."
I don't care what type of sealant is used. The clay is not vitrified and the
glazes are unstable. What is the quesiton here?!?!?!?! It is
uncomprehensible to me that one would suggest that it is somehow ok to use
Raku for anything but decorative purposes.

spray coating on their raku to preserve it's color and condition. IF the
fixative in the spray is itself food safe, it seems to me that a good
warning CARVED into the base of the bowl and a heavy spray of the coating
would kill two birds* with one stone.

Alas, Raku in the US is not raku-yaki... Since raku-yaki by definition =
can only be made by the Raku family kiln in Kyoto and basically implies =
either red raku or black raku, both subtle glazes, essentially at =
stoneware temperatures, and are meant to complement tea. In the US and =
outside of Japan in general, it refers to a technique popularized by, I =
believe, Paul Soldner, with a completely different purpose. This =
non-Japanese raku is meant to be dramatic and impressive, which is =
exactly the opposite of Japanese raku-yaki. Also, Japanese raku-yaki to =
my knowledge never has any smoke or ash deposits, whereas that's de =
rigeur in the non-Japanese style. Also, I think Japanese raku is fired =
until about 2300F, whereas something in the neighborhood of 1800F is =
normal in the US style.

The idea of a "matte" raku glaze is also inconceivable in Japan, since =
there is only red or black glossy...

They have strange ideas in Texas. In Japan, the country of
origin, Raku is only FUNCTIONAL.

Next thing you'll be telling us is that ketchup is a vegetable. =
Oh
sorry, different President. ;-)

Dear Craig Dunn Clark,
You shatter my illusions saying that <<...It is incomprehensible to me
that one would suggest that it is somehow ok to use Raku for anything
but decorative purposes....>>.
It had been my impression that Raku was for contemplation and
meditation, about willingness relinquish control of our creative
impulses to forces that we really do not understand, of being able to
mystify people with seemingly incomprehensible natural powers.
So sad to be limited to seeing things only in terms of the decorative.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
