Dear Susan Setley,
Draw rings are small coils of clay formed into circles so that they
are self standing. They are placed before a spy hole and are take from
the kiln as the chemical reaction progresses. They are the best way to
determine the rate at which the glaze surface is building. Jack Troy
in "Salt Glaze Ceramics" calls them "Draw Trials" and describes their
use. I always included four of five placed next to my cones.
Your comment about the build up of Soda residue on the is interesting.
What is the nature of this surface. Is it glassy, powdery, solid and
opaque? How would you describe it and its nature? Is it affecting your
refractories?
I know nothing about Soda Glazing from using the process and I
abandoned Salt glazing more than fifteen years ago because of the
inability to suppress crazing.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
