got a nice call from howard tonight.
we talked about my post on wheel speed.

he had never thought about it.
said...`i just set the speed the same as everyone else.`

he then said. `what do you suggest?`

i said.

` well howard, you throw very good pots...in fact you
are a very fine thrower. set the high speed to the max
that you can throw a pot, not faster or you will ruin the
pot. if you can throw as fast as you set it, you got it.`

he said.
`hmmm, that makes sense.`

then i told him a story.

`when teaching, about once a week some kid makes a great
big pot, first time...excited as hell, he is searching around and
gets excited....hits the foot pedal, full speed...the pots flies
off the wheel, hits the water bucket, slip and water all over
the kids, the wheel and the floor.`

`scream, yell, room is in chaos. ` who needs 4800 rpm's.
it will never be used once, for any purpose. ever.
set the wheel at the highest speed your best thrower can
handle a pot. leave it there.

and, don't give me the crap about centering. you center at
the highest speed you can throw. no more.

i think i have a convert, that makes wheels.
but, then, he is a fine potter too. understands the concept.
