glaze gone bad

I have found several Raku Glazes look/act differently after they are mixed
for a period of time. It's probably due to the GB. Now I dry mix a large
batch of glaze and then just mix what I'm planning to use at one time with
water. The results are a little more constant for me this way.

Is it possible or probable that a glaze can go bad???

I started doing some raku today (white crackle) and my old reliable 80/20
glaze started doing some crazy things. I got runs, thick and thin areas on
the pieces and not very good crackle at all.

This is the first time I've used this batch of glaze in about a year.

For those not familiar with the 80/20 it is

80 gertsley borate
28 nep sy
1 tin oxide

Gene, the Gerstley is prolly your culprit. It's soluble in water, and then
when the water evaporates it takes your GB with it. :(

Hehe dallin'. No, no, no. GB doesn't evaporate even if it's close
friends, H, two, and O do. I bet any soluable ions could be causing
defloc/floc (I'm too tired to get this straight in my head right now)
problems, causing the 'thinning' problem.

The clue here is the last statement - not using this glaze in a year.
Both the gertsley and neph. sy. are partially soluble, so after a
year one would expect problems.

May want to mix the glaze dry and only mix with water what you'll use
in the short term.

I've used the following glaze with GB in in and kept it for several years
with no apparent problem using it later...great crackle too (the best I've
accomplished so far....)
you can see it in use here...

If you haven't tried it ....I'd give it a go...it's been a pretty durable
glaze with a mighty long shelf life for me so far..
Hope this helps out.

Strange how some people have the problem and other do not - it might be
your local water - it could be useful to try DI water from you local water
conditioner company or even distilled.
