venco mk ii vs shimpo pm071v

Hi Clayarters:

Today I've retired my old (I think late 1980's) Shimpo NVA-07 de-airing pugmill.

I'm thinking about replacing it with either the Venco Mark II 3" or 3.5"
de-airing or the newer Shimpo PMO-71V 3" de-airing. Both of these will more
than meet my capacity needs.

It's sight unseen for me here in Fairbanks, AK, except for pictures, so I'm
asking if anyone on the list that has had experience with both of these and
has an opinion as to one or the other, or any "bewares," could comment. I'm
particularly interested in ease of disassembling, cleaning and overall
reliability.

From the comments I've read here and in the archives, it doesn't seem like
people are finding any advantage between single or double augers, but if
there is anything to be aware of here, please let me know.

I've had some problems with my NVA-07, maybe to be expected with its age,
such as wear on the plate where the double augers rest, bolts on the case
rusting/freezing to the unit; cracking of case at flange (both sides) where
front nozel attaches. And of course, this unit is difficult to clean. So
any "bewares" like this on the new units mentioned above would be
appreciated as I'd like to avoid them.

Thanks--Laura (Fairbanks, AK)

I have the Shimpo deairing pugmill. Used, not heavily, for about 5 years.
No problems. Does a great job. A friend who has a venco told me that mine
was very much easier to clean out. Quick and easy to take apart.

I made one small change. I got a piece of black pipe and beat one end of it
with a sledge hammer so that it could slip over the square handle. Much
easier on the hands. The handles do come with a foam padded end. Not quite
in the right place for my hands.

The only other change I would like to see them make is to have the plunger
head pivot/swing. My ancient Radcliffe had this feature and therefore the
head of the plunger goes into the clay straight down instead of slightly
angled which allows more clay to squish out.

You can listen to a radio while you pug. MarjB
