Howdy y'all:

I have been a busy little PIT this last week and now have some things to
show for it. One of the things I have been working on is replaceable
bats for my kick wheel. My current bat system (the nail-eating
hardybats) doesn't allow me to return bats to the wheel head for further
throwing or manipulation. I do want to try some two piece throwing so I
needed some form of reattach able bat. I hate bat pins as much as
David, so I decided to make some bats similar to the ones he uses. He
has given good descriptions about building his bats in more than one
post to Clay Town.

I have placed on my clayart page a few pictures and a brief description
on how I went about making my bats. Feel free to make comments,
improvements, etc. to either Clay Town or to me directly. I am looking
forward to trying out these bats soon. As a way to make my poor
fingernail feel better, I promised it that I would make some canvas bats
as well. They have just finished drying. Yippee!

Excellent job showing how these bats are made, Taylor.
(see the link below, if you missed it the first time)
One other difference in your bats, compared to mine, is that you used
plywood for the cleats, while I used solid wood.
I don't know if this really true or not, but in my mind, I decided to use
wood for the cleats because it is slightly compressible when pushing
with the grain. Against the end of the grain, as half the material in
plywood
will always be, wood does not have this property.
I attached the cleats really (too) tight and snug. The wood gives slightly
when putting them on the wheelhead, making for a good tight fit.

My sink cut-out bats, for those wondering, are made of Formica laminate-
covered particleboard. I never did anything to seal the particleboard, and
after more than 25 years of use the material is still fine; it just doesn't
get wet with this system.
Many of my bats have been used so much that the Formica is worn down to
the brown layer that is under the final colored layer.
Through the years, a few of the bats have become loose-fitting on the
wheelhead. This is an easy problem to fix - I simply glue a piece of
cardboard,
like from a cereal box, to the inside face of one of the cleats, with the
smooth
printed glossy side showing.

Taylor,

My husband, Ron (AKA Igor), made some bats like this for me but he used marine
grade plywood 'cause he thought it would stand up better to the water & he used
3/4" dowels cut to about 3" long instead of your blocks of wood. They work
great & I love them.

now it IS cold - 19 degrees when I got up this morning but at least it is sunny.
Wondering if spring will ever arrive. I have 200 trees in my garage waiting on
a day when the weather lets us plant them. I hope they make it....

Hello David: I pretty much use the same system and am delighted with it.
I recently ran into a problem with a new wheel. The 14 inch wheel head
is not really 14 inches, it's just a tad smaller. Loose bats on that
wheel. When I coil and throw larger pots I like to use two or three
wheels, side by side, so I can built similiar shapes at the same time.
Why couldn't the wheel maker, make a 14 inch wheel, head 14 inches?
Definitely not a big deal, almost amusing.

Maybe someday I will have a bat named after me, one can only hope!
