Earth and Fire Pottery on sun 14 mar 04

Hi all-

Just a quick note to update who know Hal Riegger. I visited with him a few weeks ago and he is doing great! For those of you who haven't heard, Hal, who started working with raku in 1948, recently fell and broke his hip. When I visited him, he had just that day started to walk without assistance, and was very excited. The doctors say he's mending extremely well for being 90, and should make a fine recovery. I spent the afternoon with him, and he was a sharp as a tack and just as smartalecky. Same old Hal. A good sign. After a bite to eat late in the afternoon, he got tired and I said my goodbyes and hit the road. So all is well.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at NCECA, dressed in black. (although i can't find my red shoes). It will be strange from going from someplace that is finally hot to a cold environment. I'll be packin' the long johns and scarf, and wearing a big smile for you all.

Hi Gregg!

I was just researching Hal Riegger, after browsing his book "Raku Art &
Technique" (1970) which I have on my shelves amongst a number of volumes
purchased a few years back from a woman who was closing her pottery studio,
when I ran across your post.

I had pretty well ascertained he was still alive pretty recently at least,
because his name and address are on a number of model rr sites, and the U.
of Iowa has some of his papers and gives a bio that showed that the ceramist
and model rr enthusiast and builder were one and the same.

About his book... I love his writing and his esthetic, which remains very
close to the Japanese "red raku" methods, though the glazes he includes
couldn't be recommended today to any but the most intrepid, and I hope,
knowledgeable of experimental rakuists.

The jacket photo from that 1970 book shows a man in his 50's, so I guess he
was careful enough in his personal handling of toxic materials, or very
lucky...

Anyway, I hope he is by now about ready to walk with no more than an elegant
cane!

Sorry folks,

I wrote incorrectly that the U. of Iowa has some of Hal Riegger's papers.

The are actually located in the University of Idaho Library's archives:
