I slip cast and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on tile molds. =
I am going to be remodeling my kitchen and bathrooms, and I was =
thinking of making my own tile for the counters. I was thinking of 4X4 =
tiles. Should I use a different slip, one that will produce more durable =
tile? If anyone has any info. or has done this sort of thing, I would =
appreciate any advice.=20
Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

You might want to consider using a stoneware casting slip.
I have used Laguna Clay Company's "Dover" slip to make tiles up to
12" x 12". If fired to cone 6, it is almost completely vitrified, and
very strong. When fired, it is not really white, but an off-white
color.

I discovered through some testing, that many of Laguna's low-fire
underglazes (other than the reds) actually do fine up to cone 6. The
colors I screen printed onto the greenware tiles fired to a uniform
semi-gloss surface. No need for clear glaze or a second firing!
