Dear ClayMates, I just heard that Lisa Orr is doing a workshop at The Clay
Studio and wanted to pass it on. She is one of the best. I first met Lisa at
the Utilitarian Clay III Symposium at Arrowmont and was awed by her process and
her pots. It would want to be challenged, inspired and juiced with new
energy, sign up for this one.

By the way, spend yesterday at the ACC Baltimore Craft Show and founds lots
of good functional pots and some very sweet shinos.

See you in Indy!

The Clay Studio presents
"Low-Tech Dish Sets from Bisque Molds" with Lisa Orr
April 24 & 25, 2004 Workshop
(Registration deadline April 1st)

$180 Members, $195 Non-members

In this hands-on workshop, Lisa will demonstrate production and use of clay
molds for making sets of softly matching dishware. Though molds are used, each
piece produced is quite unique, but resembles others in a set. Lisa, together
with the participants, will create various low-fire plates, bowls and mugs.
She will also demonstrate her style of throwing in a mold on the wheel certain
individual pieces such as pitchers, teapots and terrines. Participants will
make and use their own sprigs, and have a chance to paint and slip trail. The
workshop will include discussion of Lisa's glazing style using a low-fire
layering process. On Friday night, Lisa's slide lecture will show her work and its
influences.

Lisa Orr is a studio potter living & working in Austin, Texas. She received
her MFA from NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She was awarded
a Mid-Atlantic Arts Alliance NEA Fellowship in 1995 and a Fulbright
Scholarship to Bulgaria in 1992-94. A short list of her exhibitions includes Helen
Drutt Gallery, Ferrin Gallery, Pewabic Pottery, Baltimore Clayworks, and Northern
Clay Center. Lisa has taught workshops all across the country from Santa Fe
Clay in New Mexico to Odyssey Center in North Carolina to Peters Valley Craft
Center in NJ to list only a very few. She admits her work often refers to
traditional European and Oriental porcelain, but "with softer forms inspired by the
playful, abundant and colorful qualities of Mexican earthenware." She is one
of a small handful of artists who welcome assistants in her studio because, she
says, "I welcome the chance occurrences they bring to the work."
