? on 20 x 5 glaze

Hello Jonathan: I would just go pick up some more EPK. You can sub in
calcined at a lower percent, however you might encounter application
problems. EPK helps suspend the glaze so it won't settle quickly and
also gives gives a more durable application. I have used calcined at
times to reduce application shrinkage when the glaze wasn't sticking
well and would peel back in the firing. So it can also be a benefit.
When I do this I'll throw in a teaspoon of Epsom to help with the
suspension, also a little CMC gum to help with the poise of the glaze.
Cheers

The kaolin in this glaze is for the suspension. When you will use
calcined kaolin you will have to add CMC and to reduce the amount of the
L.O.I. which is almost 14%
Which means 20X86.1 %=17 +-
I would use a different kaolin or even ball clay.
Please note I have changed my signature. Do the glaze gurus agree to it?

Subject: ? on 20 x 5 glaze

When I was mixing up a batch of glaze this week I found that our studio
had
run out of EPK which is needed for the 20 x 5 glaze. I did, however,
find that
I had enough Calcined Clay on hand.

Question is -- Is this a good substitute, or a bad substitute?

Hi Jonathan,

Looks like 17.5 calcined kaolin will do it - but it will be difficult to
keep the glaze stirred.

Dropping the kaolin to 17 and adding 2 bentonite would be a little better.

Another perfect problem for solving with calculation software.
