Hi Debi,

I think there are various kinds too...or of various localles
or traditions...

But the ones I remember, were simple, medium thin, and about
as a half a Coconut shell in size...maybe a little
bigger...and had no foot...

But I doubt that this is typical...

Good luck,

Tell us more as you find out...

Hi,

Do any of you have experiences making prayer bowls? I have been asked to
create some and have done a little Internet surfing...but, really don't know
anything about them. I wondered if any of you have personal experiences making
them, using them - sizes, inscriptions, uses, etc.

Thanks for any information about them!

I'm assuming the person means small offering bowls that are placed on buddhist altars. I first made some about 45 years ago our of Jordan with a nice gold to dark brown buttery matt lead based glaze. They are still in a temple museum in Kyoto. To get a visual look at what they are like and how they differ among the sects is to google "buddhist supplies" or "darhma craft".

There are several catalogs that supply accessories for home altars for buddhists and you can see different types of bowls. Most in catalogs are shown in copper or brass but I'v made them in stoneware, earthenware and porcelain. In all kinds of shapes from thrown small "S" curved bowl-saucers 2" dia 1.5" tall to more cylindrical shapes. Now I tend towards "V" shaped handbuilt.

Off the top of my head the catalaog names are Dharma Craft, Snow Lion Publications, I can't remember the rest but google should be able to get it for you. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun.

Debra,

Must have something to do with wide flat bowls; whenever I make one I pray
it doesn't slump. P.S. I also have great experience with "prayer glazes"!
