thick sticky glaze that dries too slowly for dipping

Hi all,

I purchased some spectrum glazes for some low fire pots I made elsewhere
and the glazes are thick and gooey and don't dry quickly enough for
dipping. They're not thick like pudding the way glazes with lots of
gherstly borate are but almost like latex paint--gluey.

Will darvan fix this? My guess is that something's been added to make
them brushable, but brushable is not what I want. If I add some darvan,
will that fix the problem but then make them settle out into a solid mass?

Thanks much. I tried looking in the archives, but it just wasn't clear.

Yes, Janet, something has been added- gum. And you're right, it's to make
them more brushable. I've never tried adding Darvon to counteract that, but
my guess is that it wouldn't have any effect, as flocculation is not your
problem. I think your only solution is to see if you can get those glazes
without the gum, maybe as a dry powder, or mix your own. I obviously don't
know what's in any Spectrum glaze, but duplicating them should not be too
much of a problem. On a personal note, I tried some of them once myself,
and didn't like them for just this reason.
