Lorene,

Remembered your plea for advice on teaching ceramics. Stumbled across
something that might be a big help to you.

Point your browser to:
http://www.curriculum.wa.edu.au/pages/syllabus_manuals/volumes/V_arts/
art.htm
Near the bottom of the page under "Studio Documents" is a PDF document
titled "Ceramics".

There might be some other stuff there that could help you out also.

When you have a moment let us on Clayart know how you're doing.

Nothing blew up, burned down or melted...so think we're okay so far!

I did a test fire of the new kiln and we've bisque fired one load that also
went okay. We are just starting to glaze the first projects.

I've given each student a 12" square of masonite to work on and I noticed
just today that some of them have a lovely crop of mold growing on them.
Yikes! So I've cleaned them off and are letting them dry out. Does this
mean there is mold in the clay too? Is that harmful? And how can it be
avoided?

I purchased a wheel for home so that I can get a jump on it before we get to
it at school. It's the Pacifica 800 that many of you recommended. I LOVE
IT! I was having a problem the first few days following instructions until
I figured out that it was reversed. I must have switched it getting it out
of the box or something. I didn't figure it out for a few days - what a
dweeb! But that's going better now too. I need to practice, practice
practice but I'm having a great time with it.

I've not written because I am totally swamped. I got a wonderful wealth of
info from all of you and I'm trying to keep up on posts but I am usually
about 800 or so behind. Also, as a first year teacher with all K-12 grades
I'm a bit crazy and I'm also designing a Web site for the school. I'm
hoping to find some clay workshops that I can attend this summer but have
had no luck finding anything closer than probably Minneapolis/St. Paul -
about a 5 or 6 hour drive I think.

Earl - the Web site you posted is indeed very helpful - thank you and also
to all who have helped that I might have not responded directly/privately
to.
