Subject: Porcelain Enamel

Hi Vince.
I am a lurker who is very familiar Porcelain Enamel having worked with =
it off and on for about 10 years. The Enamel you put on manifolds is a =
different type than what you would use on signage and in some cases you =
would use two different kinds on signage, the back ground would be a =
'hard' or high fire enamel that is generally sprayed on. The text is =
generally screened on and is of a lower temperature than the background. =
Also, the preparation of the cast iron manifold would be different from =
the preparation of the 18 gauge steel. Porcelain enamel is applied to =
dryer drums, stove tops, tanks, and the list goes on from there. Ferro is =
one of the main suppliers of frits and colorants for the enameling =
industry. These enamels are also different from the ones that are used =
on Copper. An interesting site is: davidberfield.tripod.com . David's =
site explains the whole process and he has some interesting examples of =
peoples work.
