This message is in response to an inquiry by Bruce Girrell regarding his
broken protection tube on his OxyProbe.

I spoke with Nils Lou and we both concur that it is not necessary to to
cement/ glue the OxyProbe to the protection tube. In fact we both agree that
not cementing it to the tube may be an advantage to avoiding accidents with
the probe.

The protection tube should be inserted into the kiln at the appropriate
length. If the hole for the tube is large then take a coil of clay or
kaowool and place it around the tube to stabilize and protect from back
pressure and or heat escaping around it. Then slide the probe into the tube,
it doesn't need cement to stay in place. This will allow you to remove the
probe between firings to place in safe location. If the probe is left in the
tube it could accidentally be bummed into or crushed / broken when opening
the door of the kiln etc.

If you are intent or more comfortable with cementing in place then Nils
recommends Dylon cement product. Find following info on how to find out
