bentonite as a glaze hardener

Hello Russel
The CMC gives you another function: It makes the "paper" smooth without
"flying glaze"
I add here a letter that my friend Israel had sent to clayart.
================
Dear fred and clayArters

Peptapon is a good organic gum and binder that can be used almost the
same
way that we use CMC. I think it should also influence flocculating
properties of slip. I got some of it as a sample from my supplier years
ago. I used it as a binder for to harden raw glazes surface. Its gel
isn't
transparent like CMC gel; it is thicker at the same amount of water.
Prepare as usual CMC preparation up to 45 gram of binder in 1 liter of
very
hot water. Mix as well as you can, leave for a day and mix again.
It is a German product.

======================
I (Ababi) mix it this way: Each 1 gram into 20 gram of boiling water mix
well. When the solution is cold I add some bleach and keep in the
fridge.

Subject: Bentonite as a glaze hardener

I'm looking at different things to harden the surface of my maiolica
glaze.
I'm leaning towards bentonite added to the glaze slurry since I have it
and
since it is inorganic and won't rot.

The only question I really have is can it slow down the drying like CMC?
I
don't want that. At the moment the glaze dries pretty quickly with few
enough drips and runs as to be no problem at all.

Thanks in advance.

Russel
