a "blizzard" of white spots

What is this "blizzard" of white spots? I don't think it's normal white
spotting.

It only happens on these four colors (glaze and colors detailed info below).

I first tested them on top of the raw glase in a mix of 1 part color, 1
part Ferro Frit 3124 and 1 part glycerine. Then I thought that they needed
more flux so I doubled it and saw no difference.

You can see the tile at http://users.skynet.be/russel.fouts/clayart.htm
Watch out, the picture is really big so you can see the detail.

Thanks in advance, Russel

BTW, this tile was simply photographed by putting it face down on my flat
bed scanner.

I agree that it's not unpleasant. In fact I've got it on some work and it's
ok, just not what I'm looking for.

I'm pretty sure the discussion will happen on-line but I'll forward you
anything interesting that I receive privately.

Hi, Ru. I got rid of the blizzard by following a suggestion from Pete
Pinnell. He suggested soaking on the way up before the glaze melts. I soak
for 30 minutes at 1250 degrees F. That took care of the blizzard for me.
take care, Patricia Harden

Dear Clayarters,

Some time ago I was plagued by the blizzard. It would happen on some pots
and not on others. I was painting landscapes on my pots at the time and it
looked like it was snowing, acceptable, but really not wanted. I finally
deduced that it occurred because the pot was fired right after
glazing/decorating and felt that the moisture made the "boiling" underneath
come through the white glaze and the color on top. I do a majolica
technique on stoneware Cone 10. Does this make sense? Perhaps it could be
tested by the questioner. By letting the pot dry longer before firing, I no
longer had the problem.

Regards, Bonnie Staffel of Charlevoix, where the remodeling is progressing
on my new studio.
