I am overwhelmed by the response to my need for help. You guys are
incredible! I have collected recommended books, catalogs, lesson plans and
a couple of video tapes. I've gotten the kiln (Skutt 1018 with EnviroVent)
vented to outside but haven't test fired it yet. It doesn't have any
shelves! I found some new posts but there are no shelves?!...except for one
nasty warped one. They must have had an old kiln before they got this new
one, but there hasn't been an art teacher for 3 years so there isn't anyone
around who knows anything about it.

When I ordered clay in the fall (before I found this list) I ordered both
low-fire and high-fire clay so I understand now the importance of keeping it
separate. I got the low fire white because I was told it was easier to use
and the kids liked the color better? And I got the buff stoneware because I
know the high school students will want to make tableware (I know I do!)
I'll be sure to keep the clay and the glazes separate.

I've responded to some of the posts privately but I'm still trying to digest
all this while reading books, watching videos and planning all my other
classes (I'm a brand new teacher and have all the art in K-12...we are a
very small school). I'm ordering a wheel in the next couple of days for my
own studio at home and will have to learn ways to keep the clay dust out of
the oil paint!

This is indeed a wonderful adventure and I just really want to thank every
one of you for your support and encouragement and for just being here. I
hope that I can be as much help to others and to my students as you are to
me. And Mel - do you ever sleep? HOW do you keep up with all of this?!

In the woods but no longer alone :-)
