I was wondering if anyone has digital pictures of earlier SA
potters/artists. I have to do a PowerPoint presentation in March and
experience difficulties to find info on the net about the older
"founders of clay" in SA. The internet is a luxury for South Africans,
since they have to pay for every minute that they spent on the net, so I
guess that that is the reason why info in that regard is so limited.
I tried to get info and pictures of Esias Bosch and other sixties and
seventies potters in particular. Some 10 years ago, he was the potter
that made the biggest single tiles in the world. I've seen his work.
Some of those were very big. It was before paper clay and his tiles did
not warp. He painted with slips and glaze slips on these tiles.
Anyway I can get carried away with these people and their work. Of cause
they were my mentors in my early days of clay.
If anyone can help me out here I would appreciate that sincerely.
Regards.

I can't help with pictures, unfortunately.

But there was a book written about Esias Bosch - with wonderful scannable.
If you could get hold of a copy...

Are you planning to include Andrew Walford? He has a web-site...

Wonderful Joan! Do you have his web address or e-mail address for me
please? Maybe you have more addresses of other SA potters. I wonder if
the world ever took notice of the wonderful art that evolved in SA
between African ethnic art, Western art and Asian art. Andrew Walford is
a very strong example of this. What I forgot to mention about Esias
Bosch is that those big tiles were porcelain clay! I can not remember
how high he fired them, but they were definitely mature. Unfortunately I
do not have his book and I left most of my National Ceramic Quarterlies
behind in SA. The theme of this presentation is "South African art
meets American art" Maybe there are more South Africans on clayart, now
living in the US that can help me here.
Thanks.
