2004 stay-at-home clay exchange

updated sat 31 jan 04

Laura, don't take this personally, but people participating in the
stay-at-home mug exchange, please do all of the people who don't like OT
mail a favor (I know it's not off topic, but it DOES contribute to the
overall volume on clayart and really doesn't need to be sent to the
whole list) and mail your interest directly to Chris........

Here's my contribution to getting back on task. Having decided that I'm not
going to make it to NCECA this year, my thoughts turn to the annual "mug"
exchange for stay-at-homes like me. For those of you who are new to
Clayart, this is an exchange that has happened for several years now, during
NCECA season. 227 "mugs" were exchanged last year. Here are the rules:

This is the Stay-at-Home Clay Exchange, for those people who are
not going to NCECA and will therefore be madly jealous as the
posts fly about all the wonderful fun that will be had in Indianapolis. The mug
exchange is our consolation prize.

People who are attending NCECA can participate too, but you have
to promise to mail your mug BEFORE you leave for the
conference.

Like the exchange that happens in the Clayart room at NCECA, this is a
"clay thing" exchange, not strictly mugs.

All Clayart members are welcome to participate -- this is about making fun
connections with other members of this community, not about obtaining high-
value ceramic art.

Please note: If receiving a mug from someone of lesser skill is
going to upset you, I suggest that you not participate.

Here's what to do if you want to join in:

1. Send me your name and *mailing* (you know, like the post
office?) address (my email is: chris@lightonecandle.com)

Non-US residents are welcome to participate. If you have a
problem with paying postage across borders, please let me know
when you sign up, and I won't pair you with an international partner.

2. Make your mug (or teabowl or small vessel or candleholder or
whistle, or small sculpture or whatever.....) and be ready to
mail it no later than March 17, when NCECA starts.

Please, please, PLEASE don't sign up to participate unless you
can have a mug ready to mail *in MARCH*, not in May, not after
graduation, or after you build your kiln, or after you find the perfect glaze, or
......

3. On about March 7, I'll make the matches, then send you an
email with the name and address of the person to whom you will
send your mug or other clay thing. The person you send a mug to will also
be the person you receive a mug from. That is, person A will send a mug
*to* person B, and will receive a mug *from* person B.

Matches will be done on a random basis, with the exception that I
will honor preferences about international /noninternational
partners, as noted above, and I will try not to match anyone with the person
they exchanged with last year, to keep things interesting. Requests to
"match me with a really professional potter, not a newbie" will be met with
scorn and derision.

4. As soon as you get the name/address of your partner, get that
mug in the mail, so that hopefully your partner will receive it during NCECA
and have something to cheer them up.

5. If you have a digital camera, take a picture of your mug before you mail it,
and send it to me for posting in the Clayart Clay Exchange Gallery, which is
half the fun.
(Go to http://www.lightonecandle.com/mugexframe.html to see last year's
gallery.)

Any questions, email me directly at chris@lightonecandle.com.

Thanks, and let the mugs begin.

I've been looking forward to participating! Been too busy the past 5
years. Is it okay, as an international participant, to designate that
you only want your work to go to someone else who is also willing to ship
internationally?

Thanks,
