raku and neighbors

We live on two acres in a semi rural area that backs up to a 50 acre valley, also wooded. When I built my raku kiln between the house and the storage barn, we spread small-size gravel in a wide area around the kiln, as an extra precaution. The neighbor on my right, the chemist, is fascinated that we go to 'so much trouble' to make what we do when there are 'so many variables.' I gave him several pieces of pottery and he loved it. The neighbor on the left started building something in his backyard one day. It was a firepit. He said, we were having so much fun, it gave him the idea to use his backyard more with the family! I didn't tell them ahead of time. When they saw us firing, I invited them to come and watch, or even participate. Nobody has called the fire dept. Good luck with those rules. With all the fires out West, I am sure they have to be extra careful. Even here in Ohio, we don't raku during a dry spell, and of course, we always have water available and take all the precautions. Oh, and Simona, instead of jammies, you'd be safer wearing sturdy clothes like jeans, cotton shirts tucked in and boots. No bunny slippers! Toni in Ohio
