black glaze crawling

I think that Ron had at one point several recipes for
black and they are listed in the archives. So on the
one that crawled we would need the recipe and the clay
body in order to understand more about the statement
and why it might have crawled? Also your firing
information.

In the many experiments and years of knowing Ron via
emails, personal mail and his research I haven't known
of his popular black crawling at all. There's always
an exception to all rules so we can define what it
might be. Also so many adaptations and changing of
recipes goes on, yet the originators name stays with
the glaze, that would contribute more so to needing
the glaze as you used it. Was there any chance of
using a different chemical in any way for one of the
ingredients?

Manganese - Yes, it can have potential for harm.
Sensible use of it I believe is still practical and
still can be used in the studio. After all, it yields
a lovely purple that I doubt you will get other wise
at cone 6 ox. There's other recipes but they too will
include a hazardous material. (Didn't say toxic) But
toxicity is reached based on known parameters to do
harm accutely or chronically. Silica fits that bill as
does many other materials, but would not be considered
as toxic. But the hazards are still there and just as
likely to have potential to cause harm should it not
be used correctly and over time you inhale enough of
it. Ed B. is a fine source for information and has
several sights for public service that go into more
detail on all this and he is an enviromental
toxicologist I believe? Ed what is the lable again?
'Laff' Use good practices and of course reduce
anything you can in your studio down to the lowest
potential for contamination for product/chemicals
known for extra -ordinary problems or links to dangers
associated with such. Lead, cadmium and perhaps barium
need to lead the line up and then the list can be
created in some order as to what to watch for and how
to use, if used or needed!
