welcome to the world of small business

Tony hit it right on. We did a time-motion study years back of using new
clean boxes versus hunting through the old recycle boxes... wow! It cost us
a lot more to search for an old box than to pull a nice new standard size
off the shelf. We measure the largest of a series of items and buy boxes
that clear those as well as master cartons that can hold multiples of a
size.
Figure your time is worth $1.00 per minute at Christmas. Why skimp on
packing and gift wrapping materials?
We buy not only nice tissue but the huge rolls of bubble wrap. No sense in
boxing the gift poorly even for hand carry since you know they will be back
to complain if the gift gets broken under the tree if you packed it!
Happiest Holidays to you all!

As for the
packaging add $.95 to the end of the dollar sign and give them a decent
looking package with tissue. Yesterday in our showroom- all men shoppers!
Why? When Sheila was in school she was the gift wrapper at Sears. Guys walk
outta here with packages that look like they spent a million bucks.
Perception- a big part of the marketing mix.
Grocery bag and newspaper- one perception.
Gift box, nice ribbons, porcelain Christmas ornament attached, nice coloured
tissue inside- quite another perception.
Cheers,
Tony

Mel: We do a Profit and Loss, and Balance Sheet for every month and then a
final one for the year. We have to, it's law. This is the statement of a
small business income. No employer to send you a slip in the mail. We must
submit the P and L, Balance Sheet and Income Statement for tax purposes. As
well our banker requests a copy each year. Add to that submitting Provincial
Sales Tax collected, Goods and Services Taxes, Canada Pension Plan
contributions, Employment Insurance. We pay a bookkeeper $100/month to
handle alot of this nonsense and still it takes Sheila a day a month to sort
out all this stuff.
If you have a nice house in southern Ontario, a pickup and a nice car and
you show a loss too often, there will be nerdie looking accountants sniffing
around your business (no offense to our hot Bonnie Hellman).
The P and L is handy to look at to keep a tab of expenses. As for the
packaging add $.95 to the end of the dollar sign and give them a decent
looking package with tissue. Yesterday in our showroom- all men shoppers!
