Hey Rakuers-
Just wondering if anyone out there had and Raku glazes w/ rutile that they
where particularly fond of. I wanted to try some experiments and am looking
for a good base glaze to start with,,,any ideas? It would be great to not have
to start from scratch. Thanks in advance.....
over-and-out,

Hey Shawn!

Logan in Wa.st. here, I know I found this glaze on-line but I must have had an
"old timers" moment - brain fart whatever you want to call it. I didn't write down from where or who's formula it is. (If someone out there recognizes it I apologize! ) This is a wonderfull glaze and the creator should get all the credit & appreciation we can give!
I brush, dip & pour. Be sure to try a single, double & triple layers of glaze you get wonderfully different effects. Here it is:

Silver Blue to Silver Bronze
Raku

Gerstly Borate 50
Neph. Sy. 50
Copper Carb 50
Rutile 50
Enjoy! Happy Holidays!!!

Shawn is the 50 copper and 50 rutile the correct amounts, it seems quite high
to me.

Just wondering what your numbers mean? percents, grams? ounces? pounds?
Just don't understand. Would appreciate a little further info.

Hey Logan, don't be too hard on yourself. It could be tons, lbs, ozs,
grams, whatever, as long as we know that it is weight, not volume, it
really doesn't matter. The proportions appear to be 25, 25 ,25, and
25. Many potters show a glaze in percentage relationship adding up to
100. But they often leave the colorants out of the base glaze total.
In this case your recipe would be correct because the non-colorants
total 100. With this glaze though, with the colorants totaling 50% of
the total, I would include them in the actual recipe as a percentage of
the total.

Isn't 25 % copper & 25 % rutile a little much or am I missing something Here
. I have never used those % in any glaze. Would like some feedback.
Thanks

I dunno. We put a LOT of rutile in our dry alligator glaze and it was a
subtle difference.

I'm goign to try the glaze next semester, and I'll take pictures if they
wouldn't embarass me. :)
