more on web selling

The tool that allows you to see when and how people found your page has
been an education for me, mostly in why you should NEVER put photos of
your kids out on the web.

Mine is a site reflecting women's/mothering issues, environmental
issues, etc. and so has words in it like "cloth diapers" and "breast
feeding" and "family bed" (sleeping with baby) and "environmentally
friendly menstrual products"...none of these are particularly erotic,
but apparently my site pops up when somebody out there is looking for,
say, "men in diapers" or something involving breasts, or weird
combinations of sexual quirks (involving families in bed,
pedophilia/babies and children, I'm getting nauseous and won't be more
specific.)

It has been a real eye opener for a pretty naiive gal who had no idea
who was in the world wide "neighborhood" and what their intentions were.
I would NEVER use a picture of my children -- however perfect and
gorgeous they may be ;0) -- on a public website. My
studio/business/mailing address is out there, but I am not drawing
anyone a map to my door, either.

Just thought I would throw that out there for folks just starting a
website. Always allow for 'wacko factor'.

p.s. when I add my website to my signature on clayart, I often get some
hits from clayart folks coming to look. I want to make clear that it is
NOT my intention to spam clayart. In my many years on this list I have
only sold one pot to a clayarter; the pots I sell on line are not aimed
at potters.

gotta run..

You don't have to; if you put your street/mailing address out there, Mapquest will do it for you. I don't like putting home addresses out there for anyone to read; it's not a safe world anymore. :(

Since we were talking about ranking I thought I would share these =
resources:

Google Rankings will let you know your site's ranking under a keyword =
without your having to sift through the actual pages of Google. It will =
give a ranking up to 1000 listings. Go here =
http://www.googlerankings.com

Also, this is information Google provides on how to get a good ranking =
in Google and also practices that can get a site banned.=20

All a person needs is your phone number or full name listed in the
telephone book. Sad but true if you have someones phone number you can
find out who they are, where they live with detailed instructions to their
home on several sites on the web. I have found relatives just by their
name and what state they live in. There really is no such thing as privacy
anymore.
