don't build a web site like this...

Hey Earl, Earl here,
So how fast is your download time? IF (and that would be the problem)
you have a reasonably fast download time, (I'm on a cable modem, but the
slowest one available) and I thought the site worked fine. But I could
see where if you had a slower phone line you could have a problem.
Since this is a business site, you would think that they would design it
to be accessible to the most viewers under the most varieties of
conditions. Some of their buttons and stuff were kind of small and
obscure as well.

But really, the worst of the worst? I wouldn't go THAT far.

For those of you who are, or are contemplating, building a web site
there are many fine examples available out there to look at. However,
it also helps to look at really bad sites to see what not to do.

Today I found what I believe to be the worst of the worst.

http://www.systemthree.com (caution, large download)

I consider this a fine example of how using all the bells and whistles
available to you might not be in your best interest.

BTW: I have used System Three products and consider them excellent
materials to work with.

I disagree, Earl. I'm not real computer savvy and don't enjoy figuring out
how to navigate my way around a website. System Three made it seem like a
game...I visited pages I never would have looked at, just because I wanted
to see what it could do to entertain me!

It was so much fun, I sent the link to my boat-loving/owning brother who may
or may not make a purchase. I think the marketing worked well. If I had
the money to build a website like this, I would!

Waiting for the eastcoast storm, Andrea

At the risk of leaping in where its perhaps best I don't I checked them out
and there are far worse in the jungle. The clicks/bells are somewhat
nauseating (but funny) I must say, but the graphic layout is nice and crisp.
Rather liked the scroll vertical thing. Wonder how that's done. That said
I'm a geek so it can't be helped. The biggest problems with features on a
site like this (graphics, Flash etc) are that dialup gets nailed (but with
pictures that's almost a given these days) and that older browsers get
confused.

So having offered my opinion I guess its only fair to cough up my own URL
and let people take a look. It uses a few tricks in the Gallery pages that
require more recent browsers. But otherwise its simple enough. Its a little
spare on directions and text. http://www.clayosmos.com

Thanx

I agree with you. I refuse to use flash, and I avoid flash sites like the
plague. Silly for a business to limit its market - maybe only 2% of the
people visiting will get their error page like I did. It says to "upgrade"
my browser and DL flash (I have a very modern system in fact - just not a
vanilla system). It's one thing if you want to show anime flicks or
something - but for a regular business to limit the people who can see its
products, that's just crazy.
