Laura and Jennifer,

I use a 30" X 40" sheet of 1/4" white "foamcore" board as a reflector
suspended from the ceiling by cords so that it can be adjusted. The ability to adjust
the angle is important so that the reflected light can be "cut-off" from
reaching the sweeping area of the background (you can see the angle of the
reflector in image Photo02.jpg at the link I previously provided
http://www.members.aol.com:/dmcarch1). This IMO is the trick to getting a good gradation in the
background.
Hope this helps,

Michael, Thank you for sharing those pictures of your set up. What is that hanging down frm the ceiling? Do you reflect your light off of that?

My set up is somewhat similar to yours but I am not getting the gradation of light that you are. Your photos are very nice. Next time I shoot I will try changing the angle of the back of my sweep. I use matt white 4'x 8' laminate, it cost about $40.00 . I now think I would have prefered a light grey but I'm trying to work with the white that I already own.

To those of you interested in taking your own photos here are a few other ideas...

To difuse light I cut a piece of foam core into an "L" shape and then attach vellum to the foam core.

Cheap light stands can be made by taking empty paint cans and cementing conduit piping into it. The piping is very inexpensive and can be found at home depot. I had the pipe cut into 7' lengths at the store.

I use 12" relectors with a clamp at the end which you can then slide up and down on the light stand pipe to adjust your angle of light.

Michael,

Could you tell us a bit more about your setup?

- The foam-core is curved, is this by design?
- Could you tell us about the spots and the lens too?

You know I've been following your pots for a long time. And I'd often
remarked on the quality of the photos as well. Thanks for sharing.

Russel
