I was given two buckets of old glaze. The water had evaporated and the
stuff is ruck hard. Is it easier ton restore it by soaking or by hammer?

First you have to break it up. Use a rolling pin if necessary to
reduce the size of the particles. Then add water. You will still have
to run it through a wire mesh, though, to separate the grit or you will
have lumpy glaze. I hope you were also given the glaze recipe so you
can reproduce it yourself later -- that is, --- if you like it.
