The scientists on the list can weigh in on this (pun only noticed after the
fact, now intended), but I was taught many many years ago, either in a
science or ceramics class, to always recheck the balance of a scale after
each ingredient weighed.

I've got a good Ohaus scale with tare, bought new and well taken care of,
that will get slightly off balance - by one or two tenths of a gram - quite
often. If you're weighing largish amounts the difference won't matter, but
if you're weighing test batches, particuarly with a powerful colorant like
cobalt, it could. So in such cases I always rebalance constantly. (I
always make test batches of at least 200 gms for the same reason).

What do the scientists among us say?

Diane Winters in Oakland/Berkeley where the weather forecasters are warning
of an arctic front coming our way, which will bring us highs in the low 50's
(F) and lows down into the 30's. I'll go look for my coat.

Diane,
That is good info, thanks. I do think my scale needs a tune-up, though. It was catching on the right side where the magnetes are. The oddly shaped piece of metal that is between the mags was catching the top of the base- you know that little slot that the metel slides through when the scale is bouncing up and down? Anyway, after I got through about half the matereials i noticed that there was loose screw and once tightened it worked better.

I hope it was a good purchase. I paid only $40 on ebay (with shipping) and I just don't want to be pennywise but pound foolish. Time will tell...
