My computer is eight years old and I want to replace it. I don't have the time or ability to create one from used parts like others on the list.
I am considering a notebook/laptop that will work with my digital camera and word processing and glaze software. Anyone have a laptop recommendation?

I am rather partial to my iBook. OS X is very stable. I would spring
for the largest screen that I could afford, my little 12 inch is okay,
but if I want to compare several photos at once it is not easy. plus
the you get a lot of free software that is really great.

I'm sure they do, but ignore 'em!

Go to your library and get this past September's issue of Consumer
Reports. Cover story: "The Best Laptop For You."

They discuss the difference between lightweight laptops (expensive) and
what they call 'desktop replacements' (less expensive, and heavier, but
have more interior room for things like floppy drives, CD-ROM/DVD drives,
etc.).

And the article includes both Windows and Mac models.

Since your current computer is pretty old, you're likely in for a bit of
learning curve adventure whatever you get. But the applications you've
mentioned are not particularly demanding, so I would guess most any machine
will suit your needs. If you are currently using a Windows machine, I'd
stick with that type--likewise if you now have a Mac.

When I bought my first computer in 1984 I did so on the basis of two
things: the applications I intended to run and the availability of
support. I still think those are good criteria.

When you say "work with" your digital camera I'm not certain of the extent
to which you might mean. But there are plenty of basic 'album' and image
processing programs available that don't demand super-fast processors or
huge amounts of memory. But if you mean to use Photoshop or other high-end
image processing programs, then processor speed and memory size become more
important.
