Thanks all for the tips!!! it turned out that the connectors of the wires
between the coils to the switch were corroded, I disconnected them,
sandpapered them, reattached and now it works great! fired two cone 6 loads
w/o problems in reasonable times.

The only thing I'm concerned about (I've sent Cress email about this but
have not heard back yet, I'll telephone them tomorrow I guess.....) is that
the top coil glows much faster/earlier/lower kiln temp, then the bottom one
- that is, with both of them on medium, the top one will glow quickly, and
the bottom one takes maybe a half hour or so before it glows? is this
normal? Yes there are separate controllers for each coil section.

thanks!!!!

Connie

Often a kiln problem is minor, such as the corroded contacts Connie
described. Another common problem is dirty Kiln Sitter contacts. They
can prevent a kiln from firing. This happens when the kiln has been idle
for several years.

I'm not familiar with the Cress kiln, but ordinarily a kiln with "tuned"
elements heats faster in the top and bottom sections than the center
section. This is because the brick lid and brick bottom require more
energy than the center section. In the older kilns with switches, you
can turn the center section to a lower switch setting to even out the
load. On digital single-zone kilns, the center section of many kiln
brands has cooler elements.
