Hi everyone - I'm traveling to McAllen, Texas in a few weeks to visit =
relatives. Does anyone know of any clay supply stores in the areas? =
McAllen is near the very bottom of Texas, just across from the Mexico =
border. Please don't suggest I drive to Houston, that is 5 hours away. =
I live in Alaska and shipping is VERY expensive, so I'd like to pick up =
some stuff while I'm in Texas. =20

Thanks :) Carla

Carla, i dont know which route you will use to get to South Texas but
most of the major cities have a ceramic company with clay.. A great one in
Austin.. Amardillo Clay CO...that has several mixes, porc, stoneware, white and
brown in cone 10,6,5 and low fire.

There is also one in San Antonio that has great clay bodies. ..Do not know
the name right off.. but have used their clays many years ago. If you cant
find it listed let me know and ill try to get it for you..

One in Dallas ..Trinity Ceramics. have used all their clays and liked them-
range of cone10-6-lowfire and colors.. And they have about everything else
you might want also.. Good friendly people.. (No i dont own stock in Trinity
or any other company.)

Your route to the Valley should put you close to a company somewhere along
the way..

Hate to say it but the closest store that I know of is in San Antonio,
Clayworld. They have a website.
So far i prefer Aramdillo clay in Austin, but they have made some
mistakes recently and they have been out of fire clay. There may be
some bisque ware type shops or university supply stores.

I lived in McAllen for five years. There are few potters in the area.
Not enough to support a store. If you are flying in there are no options
but to drive north. But, if you are driving in you will probably go
through Austin which is about 6 hours north of McAllen. Stop at
Armadillo Clay. You can get their address and phone number on the web.
And BTW unless you have an extremely leaded foot, a large bladder, and
don't expect to stop for gas or food, Houston is more like eight hours
away.

People who live in Texas think of distances differently than the rest of
the country. I used to go to San Antonio for business lunch meetings.
That's a five hour trip.
