to glaze or not to glaze bottoms of plates

Besides the aesthetic decision, another reason I glaze the bottom of
plates is a matter of strength. I believe the clay sandwiched between
opposite layers of glaze makes a stronger piece, and gives it better
thermal shock resistance. I don't have any modulus of rupture data to
back up the strength issue, just experience of making lots of plates both
ways.
