In Europe you can. It is required of all countries to have (or
set up if they have not already) centres where the public can
take toxic waste for safe(?) disposal. This is anything from old
refrigerators to half-full paint cans, used batteries to unused
medications...

Look up your own local county, town, city or state
administration, environmental departments and so on... You may be
surprised at what is offered. Just because you don't know about
it, does not mean it does not exist.

You could also try sending it back to the supplier!
