gas meters

Natural gas varies in heat content, but AFAIK, it's about 1,000 BTU per
cubic foot on average. A rod is 198 inches. There's 100,000 BTU in a
therm (at least, I seem to remember that). Three barleycorns to an
inch.
They bill by the therm because they buy natural gas with different heat
values at different prices, and this method of billing regularizes your
cost based on its utility and not its volume. Four rods to a chain.
now that you know how much one specific firing took in meter-markings,
you could call your gas company and ask. They probably can tell you
both how many cubic feet it equates to, and what the heat value is of
whatever they're selling this week. A verst is 1 1/6 kilometers, more
or less. Or if they're kind they'll just do the computation for you,
and tell you "oh, 15 on the dial is 1500 cubic feet and that's 15 therms
(or whatever it works out to) and so on.

Good Friday Morning to those of you on this side of the IDL and on PDT!

Okay this is probably something I can look up, but I'm at my office and
away from my PG & E bill at the moment. Before I fired on Wednesday I
finally remembered to read the gas meter and write it down. The first
four numbers were 9784 and when I was finished they were 9799 so the
difference is 15. Now I know they are in hundreds or thousands or
millions of cf so the 15 is a lot more than 15, but I can't remember
what denomination of 10 it really is. So once I figure that out I will
know how much gas was used in cubic feet. When they bill us they bill
for therms used. I seem to remember a formula for converting cubic feet
to therms. Does anyone have that off the top of their heads and can
send it to me? People keep asking me how much it costs to fire my kiln
and I have to admit i can only guess!

Thanks,

Laurie
