Edouard,

I do believe that environmental factors affect the incidence of cancer an=
d I
am loathe to encourage any habit that might be related to an increased
incidence of cancer. However, I am also very cautious accepting results o=
f
studies that suggest the incidence of cancer is increased because of a
single item such as a couple of glasses of wine a day. The reason is that
there may be other interelated factors. For example, overweight women hav=
e
an increased incidence of breast cancer; this could be due to an increase=
d
incidence of fat intake or it might be due to the fact that heavier women
have larger breasts hence more breast tissue and an increased incidence.
Women that drink 2 glasses of wine a day might also eat more [wine
stimulates the appetite] or women with large breast might be ployed more
consistently with alcohol by their male predators, or they might live in
societies that promote other foods that somehow increase the incidence or
societies that have a genetic predispositon to develop breast cancer. The
investigator that reports an increased incidence with wine/alcohol
consumption is reporting a true fact but it may not be the alcohol but
rather other factors. Large dogs have a higher incidence of bone cancer t=
han
small dogs; is it because they have more bone mass? Possibly. When I was
practicing oncology, I treated a large number of patients with head and n=
eck
cancer - cancer of the mouth, tongue, tonsils, soft palate, pharynx, lary=
nx
and nasopharynx. A large number were alcoholics but almost all alcoholics
smoke - is there then a single cause or do the two habits combine to
increase the incidence? Anyway you see the point; it can be complicated.

Tom,

excellent text.

I knew you would answer mine.
(Hehehehe)
Everything is inter-related in our life.

Biostatistics is a complicated matter
and investigators are often times to
eager to publish their results.

For years aniline was considered a
bladder carcinogen and it is not anymore.
This was caused by wrong methodological
means used decades ago.

So, let us continue to be prudent.
