I meant to add that there's a lot of passion and
excitement that goes with doing glaze work and
calculations. If all people were involved in side by
side testing and calculating like Ron and John do in
their classes, all this stuff would make more sense.

My approach is: Look at the recipe, decide if its
something I might like, run through calculations,
decide if its viable, mix 500 grams minimum, fire it
on several choices of clays. Look at it again! If it
doesn't kick somehow and I want to spice it up I start
over. If its a butt kicker glaze that lights up my
world and I intend on it being used in any fashion
that might hold food or drink, off it goes to get the
lab testing and we take it from there. Not all qualify
for testing based on the ingredients used but some
justify being tested if they contain known materials
that are regulated or known to leach based on
chemistry and components in use. Check federal
drinking water standards, anything that topples the
known parameters but still has your eye can easily be
lab tested once you calculate and test out the theory
and have concluded you have carried this baby long
enough and now your glaze is due to be born. Once you
get back your paper work you can decide if its a
keeper or it you want to put it up for adoption at
that point.
