Hi Gang,

So my eyes have been opened to glaze "life" by way of my
crystal "experience". When you work for days with a piece=20
and see it day in and out THEN you see it come ALIVE from
one little quirk of fate it opens ones eyes. More about that=20
later....

I have a question for you all. You know that saki pot on the
cover of the Ron and Jon book. WOW! Can stare at the closeup
again and again with my "new eyes". Can be seen at:
=20
http://www.masteringglazes.com/index.html

Well, what all would you all say is going on there? Can you list
the things going on?

Is that just one glaze? I can see how it changes colors with
depth but there is much more. Are there crystals at work there? =20

They've sold some 5,000 copies of that book, somebody must=20
know or have a theory? This is a pop quiz, I'm standing in for
your teacher today. =20

Now, about that crystal thing that started getting stronger just
recently. Last night a clayarter called and we discussed all the=20
things that could be influencing it and there is really a pretty
well worn list now. But he added a whole new one that might
be instructional: as our machine Charley started making more
and more tiles we were firing bigger and bigger loads. Do you
see it yet? We were using more and more SITTERS... the
thermal mass in the same kiln was going up 3, 4 fold so the=20
COOLING WAS SLOWING DOWN. (yessss!!, markedly so -=20
that was one reason I took a peak when I would never have
otherwise.... largely in frustation that the kiln was taking=20
forever to cool down. )=20

It probably wasn't the peek=20

- cause and effect got reversed..... =20

That has never happened before !?

Liv'n and Learn'n,

George

About to leave for Northport. Snow in Upper Penninsula last=20
night. Oh boy, ohhhh boooy. Long john season is upon us
here....

Hi George,

Yes it is one glaze - and I do believe there are several kinds of crystals
in that glaze - and perhaps different glassy phases as well.

I've been looking at glaze crystals for a long time now - ever since I got
my magnifiers - I used to think they must all be the same in shape -
couldn't have been more wrong. They come in all shapes and sizes.

I don't think there is any doubt about it - aside from the chemistry of the
glaze - the big factor is cooling - crystals need time to form and each
kind have a different temperature forming range - just as each glaze has a
different melting point, transition stage and freezing point.
