paper dust? and michael flynn

Oh, Karen, you lucky, lucky duck! A Michael Flynn workshop...???
oh, I am positively pea green with envy!

Thank you so much for your post... His figures are wonderful,
aren't they? In the tradition of the Dresden figurine, but what
enormous physical presence and social commentary. "Dancing on a
pin" is exactly right! They look like they are going to trip
along and dance off the table at any minute... Stunning.

As for "paper dust", it is what you get as a bi-product off the
paper making industry. Also publishing/printing works, because
when there is a lot off paper cutting and guillotining going on,
the dust and other slivers of paper falls down into large
containers underneath which are cleared out regularly to prevent
spontaneous combustion. Seeing Michael lives in Germany part of
the time, he probably has access to a good source there... It is
waste and they will give it away free if someone has the
time/inclination to get some for you. I imagine your local
newspaper printing works would be another good place to ask.

Be warned: it is *very dusty*, so if you source some to use,
please wear a mask!

And please tell us more about the MF workshop!!!

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser - Eckhard has just come in and commented I am like a
demented Mother Hen this evening... Had to explain myself... The
initials MS and MC should be enough for you guys to understand...

*** IN REPLY TO THE FOLLOWING MAIL:
>I watched Michael Flynn construct some figurative pieces....
>they were not large... perhaps 12-14 inches tall.
>His process was really interesting, as
>the work was done in porcelain.
>He had a profound appreciation for the figure...
>that is a beginning of the story.
>The figures would develop and on his work
>table were groups of limbs...arms...legs...
>and the clay figure would be almost bone dry...
>the amazing thing to watch was when he would
>pull off an arm...take some slurry apply it
>to the parts and re-attach the arm giving the
>form a different gesture. It's how he makes
>his figures look like they are dancing...
>spinning on a pin....amazing absolutely astonishing.
>
>So my first response was that "YOU CAN'T DO THAT???!!!"
>
>I next asked...how do you do that...
>His response was that he adds "Paper dust" to his porcelain.
>So...that is perhaps not paper clay...
>it's a material he gets from paper/book making suppliers...
>So does anyone know what paper dust is?
>Don't send me off to get toilet paper please.
