brent wheel question

updated sun 18 jun 06

i have had several folks tell me that
they have had serious problems with
brent wheels, brand new ones. it seems
that folks feel that amaco has cheapened them.

i would like information from anyone
that can verify this information. (amaco can chime in.)
not here say, but real information.

i have been a strong believer in brent
wheels, and have been slipping in my
opinion of them. i would like some
firm information.

i do like my new axner, dannon had very good luck
with her new bailey's. the thomas stuart has such
great torque and power. (and, in the back of my head
i believe the willy wheel from lockerbie may be the best
of the bunch...but, i do not have one to test.)

but, i do not like to make open statements on
clayart if the facts do not match. good or bad.

I purchased a new Brent CXC in 2001. It came with two annoying problems. One
which was intolerable.

The first problem was with the foot pedal and control box. When decreasing
speed it had about a two to
three second delay before the motor kicked in again to deliver the speed at
which I was intending. If not, then
another delay as I back off on the pedal. I tried to adjust the foot pedal
using the rheostats (sp) inside the
casing, with no luck. I called Brent and they said it was a common problem
with the new wheels of 2001,
and that I should return the pedal and control box so they could replace the
circuit board. The repair was
done quickly and I received my repaired parts in less than a week. It works
great.

The second problem, which I am just living with is the bat pins are just a
millimeter off center. If you
are using bats, remove your pot, then replace the pot back on the wheel, you
must place it back
in the original way it was thrown or else the pot is slightly off-center.
Now I just use a marker
to mark the wheel head and bat so I can re-align them if I need to put them
back on the wheel.

I never knew how nice it would be to have perfectly centered bat pins until
I purchased a second
wheel (2002), which is a Pacifica model 800. What a sweet wheel! Bat pins
perfectly centered, more
quiet, not that the Brent is really noisy, it's just that the Pacifica is
REALLY quiet.

Both my wife and I throw, so my wife gets to use the Pacifica since it does
sit about two inches
lower than the Brent and she has shorter legs.

My previous wheel, I had for the past 20 years, was a Shimpo RK2. It is
still a great wheel and still
working for a potter who really needed it. I often wish I hadn't sold it,
but when I see the pots this
young and eager potter makes, I know I did the right thing. Plus I got to by
a new wheel.

I have never experienced any other brands of wheels, but after working on
the Pacifica I would purchase
another.

Hope this helps, Ken Yancey

Ditto!!!! I had this same problem with the Brent CXC that I bought about 2000
I think. It was my 2nd Brent and has caused me the same problems as you have
had. When I tried to brainstorm on the phone with the tech people there,
they sent me a new control board....and the wheels still was running a helling
with no control over the speed. I told them I thought that something had broken
in the foot pedal and that prior to that would "miss"...in that I would push
the pedal and nothing til it was way down and then go max RPM....impossible!
More calls to brent and finally got a new pedal that had to be adjusted and
readjusted, and readjusted....and it is newer than my old CX from about the mid
80's and
Honestly, if I had to purchase a new wheel it would NOT be a Brent.
I also had the same problems with the bat pins just a mm off center and have
had to fix some bats to accommodate it, etc.
Wish I had known or maybe I would have purchased another brand. But thing is
I was so happy with the CX, who would have thought that the CXC would give me
so much trouble.
I am not really very good at fixing things, so it was additionally
aggravating to not know what was wrong and then have to figure out how to do all this
stuff and then replacing the circuit board....well that didn/t help either.
What a mess! Think it is finally straightened out, but since we are on the
subject of Brents,
I would like to hear more about the Wheels out there that you people are
really enjoying? Wheels that remain problem free for many years!?
Sincerely
Susan

i have a 23 year old brent cxc. i have had no problems in the 11 years i've had it...until 2 weeks ago. i have to repair/replace the pedal or the switches-i haven't gotten the entire diagnosis yet. just got it back today from the electric motor shop and was VERY happy to find out that i don't have to replace the motor. my overall experience with a brent product has been very good.

I stand corrected, I just checked my tax records and I purchased my
Brent Model C in June 1998! I've had it longer than I thought. I
haven't been throwing a lot mostly sculpting and using the wheel to
throw assorted cylinders to chop up for sculpture. Just this summer I
have gone back to throwing functional ware. I discovered I had
developed a lot of bad habits since I learned to throw in the 70's so I
am studying throwing again!
And reading Clayart!

This is a common problem, but it is before 2001. I bought a Brent C
in 2000, and i have had nothing but problems with the foot pedal. I
get the same delay, and then a kick, usually at slow speeds. =20

The problem has been resolved (fingers crossed) with the help of an
excellent technician, my warranty that Brent honored, and no less than
2 new pedals. Replacing the whole inner workings of the pedal didn't
help - the whole shebang needed to be replaced.

hi-
i also got a brent cxc in 2001. i had problems with the pedal the first month
after starting to use it. i adjusted it according to the directions and it
has been doing fine since. i have only thrown on brents and soldners. i loved
the soldner control but didn't like what long time use did to the wooden table
top. my brent is not a quiet as i would like. some are virtually silent;
but...otherwise i am happy with it.
just got back from ft. walton beach, fl. saw many sea birds, dolphin, and a
school of ramoras..sp.? they liked my red bathing suit which i quickly
exchanged for one of a different color!
happy potting.

After reading the Brent wheel thread I will now have to see exactly
when it was that I purchased my Brent model C wheel. I could swear it
was around 2000-2001. So far it has been a good
reliable wheel. I will measure the bat pin holes tonight to see if they
are off at all. I have not noticed any speed problems with the pedal.
In fact I like that it will stop on a dime when I want it to, unlike
some other brands I have used in classrooms. The only thing is
sometimes it does make a sound like it is vibrating (although there is
no vibration I can feel) but that is only when I have the Giffin Grip
on it and I suspect that may be the source of that noise at slow speeds.

My model C is not the reversible one. Does that make any difference
with the controller? What are the serial numbers of the problem wheels?

This is a most interesting thread!

I got my first Brent CXC about 5 years ago. My second Brent CXC last year.

1) First Brent had a speed control problem. It would sometimes stick,
sometimes would slow to a snails crawl but would not stop turning. VERY
quiet machine. The cotrol problem was addressed when Brent sent me some
new electronics for the foot control. I sold the machine before getting
them installed so don't know if they worked or not. Don't know what the
buyer did with the newer components.

2) New machine Purchases in 2002 is excellent in all respects but one.
Especially like the ability to disconnect the power cord and the cord
for the foot pedal. However .... VERY NOISY machine.

I bought a new Brent CXC in 2001 straight from AMACO (I live near =
Indianapolis). When the wheel arrived at my home studio I discovered =
that it was a C in a CXC box all factory sealed. AMACO gladly took the =
wheel back and delivered another one the very next day. I have had =
absolutely no problem with my CXC. Speed, pedal, wheel head, and bat =
pins all seem fine. I think that Brent revamped their C line in either =
2000 or 2001 and as with all new models it takes a while to get all the =
bugs out. As long as Brent continues to stand behind their products, =
listens to their customers, and provides prompt, courteous customer =
service I think their wheels are still great machines. I am interested =
in hearing what other Brent users have experienced.

Mine is not reversible, although I have it rigged up to go clockwise
rather than counterclockwise. =20

My next wheel will be a CXC because it reverses, and I can teach my
kids to throw. Even though I had alot of foot pedal problems, I'm
still really happy with the wheel and the customer service I received
from Brent. =20

Subject: Has Anyone tried the new 2006 Brents models?

Hi I'm going to receive, sometime late this year, a Govt fund to buy
some equipment, which I'm not going to get to try before I get it...

I was wondering if anyone has tried the new 2006 models... I was
originally thinking of asking for a C model, but some people on another
list suggested the CXC model. The New C model has a 3/4 HP is there any
other difference between the two other than the motor size? I'm not sure
if I'm ever going to need more than 50# of centering capacity... Should
I go for the new B model?

Hi All,

I have a Brent C, build around 2000 I believe, with a feature which I find
just a little annoying. Whenever you troddle back on the wheel speed the
wheel noise (and I suspect the power) stop completely until the wheel rpm
drops to the appropriate speed for the foot pedal, then it starts up again.
Is this normal for a Brent?? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hello, This sounds as though your foot pedal needs to be adjusted. You need to flip it over and remove the screws to get to the adjusting screws and move them until you get it to the correct speed and power that is right for you. I had a Brent CXCK that I had to adjust a couple times jduring the decade that I owwned it. If you have any further questions, contact the supplier that you purchased it from and they should be able to walk you through this procedure. Happy mud fingers, Kelley
