glaze, glazing, idiots, lazy

No one is an idiot. No one is lazy. (We KNOW the exceptions DON'T WE?"

Glazing involves two things. First the application, which is equally hard
and takes just the same amount of time and effort to learn to do whether you
start your glazes by digging the raw materials out of the ground, refining
them etc, or buy ready made glazes at the store.

Making your own glazes is quite another matter. For one it ends up being
costly. You need the materials, lots of them, you need storage space, you
need to test fire....and you need to know what you are doing. All this
takes time and money, and a certain amount of interest in la chose en soi.

For many people all the "research" is beyond their possibility. For them
either buying the ingredients for a specific recipe they know and love, or
buying ready mixed glazes is the best way. (Ababi: I really do not see how a
mother of six with a fulltime job and a sick husband is lazy for using
commercial glazes.)

NEWBIES: Many of us on Clayart would rather putter with glazes than
anything else. We love it. We are like orchid growers who are always in
the hothouse hybridizing things. Ignore us. Learn from us, but ignore us.
Clay is not the kingdom of the Perfecti. Anyone can get in, anyone can
play. What is needed is respect for what others do, can do, and for THEIR
love of clay. If you want a PhD in ceramic chemistry, go for it. And if
you want to make things that are pretty, go for it. Just do not mock and do
not trivialize.
