From Jarvis; "The encyclopedia of Ceramics",1902.

Concerning the original question of terra cotta and porcelain.
"Terraglia. A hybrid porcelain midway between earthenware and china".

Also here the Terra Cotta is defined as "Literally baked earth. The term
usually employed to indicate a red or buff clay of close texture and unglazed"

So again the term historically conflicts with contemporary use.
Any thoughts?
