CLAY IN COMBINATION
http://www.baltimoreclayworks.org/workshops.htm

The emphasis of Lynn Duryea's workshop will be large-scale slab
construction and exploration of the sculptural potential in combining
clay with other materials. Workshop participants will generate a
personal vocabulary of shapes and forms with which to work.
Demonstrations will incorporate the use of pattern-making and tarpaper
maquettes as well as a variety of molds and methods for building with
clay slabs, including the innovative SlabSling, a Duryea design. Lynn
will also demonstrate the cutting, wrapping and fastening of thin sheet
steel. A wide variety of low-fire and no-fire surface possibilities
will be discussed. Workshop participants may want to bring existing
objects that are particularly compelling to them or have the potential
to be used in combined forms.

Lynn Duryea, a studio artist in Maine since 1975, completed an MFA in
Ceramics at the University of Florida in May 2002, where she also worked
extensively in the sculpture department. Lynn's considerable experience
with clay includes both functional and sculptural objects. For many
years Lynn operated a production studio, creating decorative work that
was marketed through national craft venues. Currently Visiting
Professor of Ceramics at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville,
Texas, Lynn's teaching experience is with diverse populations and ages
and includes the Haystack School, Santa Fe Clay and Maine College of
Art. A founder of Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Lynn is also
Artist-in-Residence and Program Coordinator for The Watershed Workshop
for People with HIV/AIDS. She is part owner of Sawyer Steet Studios, a
cooperatively-owned ceramics facility in South Portland, Maine. Lynn
was a 1998 recipient of Portland's YWCA's Women of Achievement Award,
the first visual artist to receive this honor.
