Paul,
I asked a Chinese clay artist from Jingdezhen your question about the
source of cobalt in Chinese glazes. She replied today that as far as she
knows, the cobalt blue on Chinese porcelain from Jingdezhen beginning in the
Tang dynasty about 600 years ago was achieved using imported cobalt. She
said that more recently, during the Ming or Qing dynasty a source of cobalt
was found in China. It was mined from the mountains. It was not from a
water-borne alluvial or placer deposit.
So she basically confirmed what has been posted on the list so far about
this.
Good potting!
